There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive vacation and hotel compound that features many luxuries in addition to the gambling den, which offers 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 tables.
